Confirmation Hearings
I’m embarrassed. Truly embarrassed.
Every time we elect a new president, we’re forced to endure the appointment of new department heads. And every time these vacancies are filled, we showcase—both to the citizens of this country and to the world—just how absurd our government committees behave during confirmation hearings.
This isn’t just a right-vs-left, conservative-vs-liberal, or Republican-vs-Democrat issue. It’s an issue that serves no one—not the parties, not the appointees, and certainly not the individuals conducting these hearings. Yet, with every administration, we continue to display contempt and hatred toward those chosen to serve, undermining the process with a toxic political circus.
These confirmations often seem less about determining an appointee’s qualifications and more about showcasing the ignorance, hypocrisy, and self-serving arrogance of the senators involved. Rarely do the appointees receive meaningful questions about their ability to perform the job for which they were selected. Instead, they are subjected to a spectacle—a “dog and pony show” filled with personal attacks, irrelevant interrogations, and, at times, disgraceful insults directed at their families.
The most recent offenders of this shameful behavior include Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)—a group that could easily lay claim to the title of “The Stooges on the Throne of Idiocy.”
Unfortunately, I have no doubt this absurd display will continue in the coming days and weeks, as more senators join the ranks of those clamoring for attention in *The Land of Misfit Toys.*
But this is America—for the whole world to see.
