Elon has owned the domain x.com since the 90s. He wanted to use it for Paypal but Peter Thiel nixed the idea. Since then he's been kicking around the idea of an "everything app" called X which I can only assume is like Line in Japan or WeChat in China. He's been planning to use Twitter as the prototype for that since he bought it.
