Hear me out on this, an incentives-based immigration solution:
Open the borders... BUT...
Abolish all of the social programs, free government handouts, free housing, and all the government-funded *everything*. Get rid of free healthcare and food stamps. No more government-funded shelters from the cold or heat. No more government-funded transporation to and from your crack dealer.
(None of this stuff is "free" anyway; it's being paid for by taxpaying citizens)
Make immigrants start at the bottom of the ladder and work their way up, like it was back when immigrants - the ancestors of current citizens - arrived in the 1800s. If you want to come to my country, your ass better get to work, or starve. Don't like it, get the fuck back to where you came from.
Harsh, certainly. Making people responsible for their own well-being is certainly a radical idea that has fallen out of vogue in the last 50 years. But I can assure you, it would cut down on the number of useless people flooding over the border.
