Not everyone goes to therapy to resolve mental illness. It is more of a process of self development, integration of your multiplicity of subjectivities, and a method to become more fully alive.
I am a therapist and the vast majority of the people i see do not have any mental illness. They are just garden variety neurotics like myself.
Besides, symptoms of psychopathology is just the organic self/soul calling to be heard.
There really are people who are skilled in helping the organic self be heard and integrated (brought in from the shadows) and thus growing your range of aliveness.
Why do all of that ? growing ones ability to be alive is arguably our responsibility/a privilege once we have food and shelter covered.
And if you are a parent - we need to grow our ability to be alive to model it for our kids.
That’s what I do- help people grow their ability to be more connected to self and other. That is a fun process.
It is not a journey that has a final destination.
