I do not follow baseball at all, let alone Japanese baseball. But when we visited Tokyo, my wife and I wandered into a baseball game and were adopted by a pair of BayStars fans who shepherded us through the entire experience — the cheers, the foods, the customs, the songs — with a joy and broadness of spirit that is still my model for how to treat a stranger in one’s own land.
I haven’t seen them play again since, but I’m a lifelong BayStars fan.
