i think consolidation has really impoverished the American sense of what kind of shopping is possible. it's ironic, because the original idea of a supermarket or a big box store is to give you **all** the options, more options than you could possibly ever need. now everything has consolidated into a handful of chains, and those chains are all supplied by a smaller handful of wholesalers.
