Anecdotally, in the last 5 years there has been a huge (and inexplicable) rise in the use of semicolons but they're usually used incorrectly. The safe play: Just say no! Use periods and commas! Periods are so great. Short, sweet sentences whenever possible. You probably do not need to ambiguously extend with semicolons.
