When you look at modern Europe it's easy to see. I think it comes from the fact that a lot of early settlers were religious zealots. I think @Alexwild is correct that it is becoming more tolerant, however. Our problem right now is that we've reach a point where we're roughly evenly split between right and left and it's causing increasing conflict, mostly from those resist the change.
