Okay, I read through this whole thing, but my first reaction is the strongest one. A burden? WTF? What kind of friend says that, to anyone? Not to discount the other extremely valid points, but I can't get past that word. Perhaps they have valid concerns about people's physical/emotional/other resources to be able to help you, but my gosh. There are other ways to say that than saying you're a burden on people. I just do not understand how people can say such things.
