A black squirrel seen in Foster City, California. Melanistic squirrels are not common in most of California, but seem to be common in Foster City.
My hypothesis is that the squirrels adapted to camouflage against the black roofs, black parking lots and black roads because the only natural predator left here is an occasional hawk.
