It was fitting that such creatures were infected with parasites! -- He'd seen them moving over the surface of the ship. If his whale ticks that large he would be deeply miserable.

Perhaps the giant parasites have driven it to madness? It seemed they ate as much of the kills as the ship. That would explain why it keeps its calf on its back out of the water (even though the calf is the more capable hunter...and that too is strange) that might even explain the senseless mutilations. 3/3
