It's not about Fedi users at start, because they want to add AP support in future and started without it, they also surpassed Fedi user count in just couple of hours
The post you're quoting is also not convincing to me. We already have to either use different platform or not connect with friends if they're not here. If Meta would kill AP support it'd just return to current state and the only change would be Threads instead of Twitter
