i have one of the early MNT reform laptops ! it's cool but also, pretty soon after i got it it turned out to be some errata with the motherboard's power management, which i was supposed to fix myself, but i don't have great soldering skills
(to be fair, they did offer to repair this for free if i were to send the laptop to Germany)
also the batteries became unusable very quickly (no, they didn't explode 😀 ) because apparently they discharge when not using them and below some level they just die
so all in all, i never got to use it for what it intended it for
i guess my point is that unless you're an electronics whiz, open hardware isn't going to be a great experience, and compared to open source software it's harder to find help, because you need to find someone local, which isn't easy as long as it's so niche
