I seem to recall the Linux community being absolutely terrible about supporting new users at least as far back as the late 90s—maybe earlier, viewing it as a hair shirt discipline or a rite of passage or something. (I think a chunk of it isn't Linux so much as GNU; the FSF has always had a nasty we-know-best elitist streak.)
