This is my experience all my life. I can see the logical outcomes of bad decisions way, WAY ahead of everyone else in the room, especially when it’s in a field I have a lot of experience in (e.g. software).
People don’t want to hear bad news, even when it’s right. These days I restrain myself from jumping to the overwhelmingly probable end result, and resort to the Socratic method of walking people through each step of the reasoning process until they reach the same conclusions.
Most of the time, about halfway, people will balk at some logical step, because it’s culturally unacceptable to take that position—that usually happens when some executive’s rosy proclamation contradicts reality—and they refuse to proceed in their logical journey. That’s when I usually stop and let them learn things the hard way.
