Bought a new cable modem because my old one got fried. Old one was a NetGear; the new one is a fancy high-end Arris SurfBoard.
The quick start guide is basically just "install our mobile app" and while I didn't need it for the initial setup, my first few speed tests were pretty slow, so I thought "hmm maybe I need to tweak some settings," and I installed it.
People let me tell you: The Arris SurfBoard mobile app is just a data harvesting scheme. You hit a point in the process where they *insist* on scanning your local network and sharing whatever information they find with a third party, Fing.
You can opt out, but if you do so, you can't proceed any further in your use of the app; i.e. you can't ever connect to your modem & adjust settings. What a bunch of hot garbage.
After bailing out & uninstalling the app, I ran another speed test & now I'm getting the full speed I'm paying for (higher, actually, LOL), so the moral of the story is, I guess: don't install the Arris SurfBoard app.
