It can also be used to speak on how an character thinks; does he relay on heuristic gut feelings or is he meticulous in approaching each situation with no assumptions? How the writer subverts and reinforces those assumptions is a fun way of exploring the line between those philosophies. Distilling all this utility down to "color bad" for some tired attempt at social commentary really does a disservice to your story; at least if you do do it, make it in service to a funny joke or something instead.
