the big issue (outside of UX ofc) is data portability. People have sentimental value to their post history, and it's not out of the question they want to keep that even if they have to move instances.
Bluesky seems to be nailing this as part of their plans, and fedi would be better trying to bring account portability in, even if it means a drastic change to ActivityPub.
