"North Shore, Lake Superior," Franklin Carmichael, 1927.
Canadian Franklin Carmichael (1890-1945) was one of the famous Group of Seven artists, who lovingly depicted the Canadian landscape, believed that direct contact with nature was vital to art, expressing spiritual values through art, and promoted an idea of a national Canadian artistic identity.
Carmichael also worked as an illustrator, graphic artist, and teacher. Although his work was sometimes dismissed in his day, and he was considered perhaps the least of the Group of Seven, he's still well regarded today.
From the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.
