Seeing the current developments in social media / communication platforms is fascinating - it's in some way a return to the ways digital networks worked before the rise of what we now call "the internet" in the 80s and early 90s.
You had various more or less incompatible networks of BBS systems delivering personal messages, threads of discussions and other digital media. Here in Germany we (just as an example) had Fido-Net, Z-Netz, Mausnet, GeoNet and others.
The interesting point is: Very few of those networks where controlled by one big entity, most where run by private operators or small companies.
I think its interesting that we are now moving again in this direction with Nostr, the Fediverse and (somewhat ) Bluesky
