Before life on earth there was a lot of carbon in the atmosphere.
As life evolved over many millions of years, some of the carbon was slowly taken out of the atmosphere and put it into the ground.
If this process were allowed to continue without correction, then life would eventually die out because there would not be enough carbon in the atmosphere to sustain life.
It is fortunate that a form of life would eventually evolve, that would dig up some of the carbon from the ground and put it back into the atmosphere.
Isn’t nature great!
