Ep 4 has presented some interesting character development.
So I went into the show thinking it was basically a soft copy of Hyouka. A high school boy feels compelled to solve social mysteries, but isn't excited about it. Definitely a different vibe, though.
Now we're given info that both the boy and the girl are friends with flaws trying to be ordinary to escape the grief that came with indulging in their flaws. Kobato is clever, describes himself as a fox, and claims that in the past his cleverness resulted in people describing him as an asshole. Osanai is timid, but Kobato says that she's a wolf. Used to take pleasure in beating the shit out of people that pissed her off.
We don't get a look at that, but I'm very intrigued by it.
