I've [thought](https://github.com/jamesob/assumeutxo-docs/blob/master/proposal/feedback-david-harding.txt#L172 ) since the start that the background validation added a lot of complication for not much benefit (maybe even negative benefit). It seems to me like it would be a lot simpler to just allow loading a UTXO snapshot or sync from genesis but not try to do both.
