There are many reasons, but I think overwhelmingly people are becoming more individualistic in their decisions about their lives. In recent years, non marriage partnering has replaced much of the decline in marriage. I suspect that the paradigm is moving towards the majority of people being single and having multiple relationships of various types for shorter periods as it suits their life.
