I could speculate that Mastodon is perhaps a microcosm of the society at large, where things like racism are truly invisible to swaths of the population. Not ignored, but just insulated from, and then blind to. I'm i straight white guy, and I honestly don't see blatant racism, or homophobia, or other bigotry here, but I know it exists.
