The Wicker Man (2006).

The most hated masterpiece I have ever seen. It won (or nominated for) a number of awards for Worst 'this and that' (Picture, Actor, etc.). Scores a stinking 3.8 on IMDB yet, in my opinion, is up there with "A Clockwork Orange" and kind of a cross between that and "Zardoz". This movie has the potential to become a cult classic. I highly recommend watching it!

A tiny budget film that is a disturbing black comedy, of searing insightful critique, of the current thing. Which current thing is that? I can't say without ruining the movie. But let's just say it's sharply directed at a subset of 50% of society. Which I suspect is why it is so hated.

I think the natural and building scenery is beautiful, script is great, the actors great, and the plot superb. So much of the characterization, script and plot are ripe with social critique and metaphorical meaning. The original theatrical version ending, the one with the epilogue, is the icing on the cake, and so, the version to see.

Perhaps it's a current day parable, its real message disguised to some, and blindingly obvious to others? For those that do not understand the allegory, they might hate it. But for those that do understand, it hits them right in the face and so, cause them to either love it or hate it.

But to me, the most interesting thing about this movie is the really awful IMDB score, and awards, which are simply unwarranted, so perhaps that also says a lot about current society, or at least, the society of film enthusiasts that write reviews there - a certain section of society, for sure. You can guess who they might be.

The movie is really very different from the original and good for very different reasons, it's like the director tells a completely different story, which again introduces a new surprise ending (which was one of the reasons the first was so loved).

If you liked Cage's recent Dream Scenario, I think it's likely you'll love The Wicker Man (2006). Don't read any reviews beforehand. Watch the movie. Think about it while. Then perhaps read some reviews.

Thanks for reading. Give the movie a try. It's a hidden gem - even if you hate it!

Love to hear your thoughts about this movie. Love it? Hate it? Why so?
