okay i have one of those weird questions where i don’t even know what to put into a search engine.

so, we are talking about tech level: everything we have now but better. like, no fundamentally new science, but everything is more and better. much better telescope, significantly better computers and much, much more of them, etc.

so say this is the tech level but then someone comes and does invent fundamentally new technology, namely something like a jump drive

so what would it take for you to get lost within our galaxy? i mean navigation wise. you don’t end up where you think you’re gonna end up and you can’t figure out where the fuck you are, but in reality you’re still within the milky way

i assume it’s not inconceivable to have a sufficient amount of stars mapped to be able to match the sky to a place within the galaxy? or is it?

or do you use, like, pulsars to triangulate your position?

or is this actually somehow impossible to do?

what happens if you accidentally time travelled a little? how long away would you need to be for the maps to become useless? years? hundreds? thousands? millions?

someone who knows about stars please explain
