The Ogallala Aquifer is one of the largest in the world, spanning eight states in the United States, from South Dakota to Texas. As with so many other materials, it has been treated by humans as having an infinite supply of water. As Max McCoy wrote in the Kansas Reflector:
"In the 1950s, it was thought the water in the aquifer was inexhaustible. In some places, such as beneath the community of Jetmore, north of Dodge City, the aquifer is already nearing depletion. "
