The idea that humans are somehow “superior” to other living things has been so ingrained into our culture (and I would argue that this is particularly true in healthcare) over the past 60 or so years, that many people cannot comprehend that a simple virus can kill or debilitate them. When they are confronted with the reality they simply cannot accept that a tiny virus can somehow “defeat THEM.” /1
