«It is one of those delightful evenings where the whole body is one sense, and inspires happiness through every pore. I come and go in Nature with a strange freedom and I am part of it. As I walk along the stony shore of the lake, in shirt sleeves, despite the fact that there is a cool wind and the sky is covered, and I see nothing particular that attracts my attention, all the elements are strangely congenial to me. The frogs bellow to announce the night, and the note of the caprimulgo is brought on the whisper of the wind from above the water.
The communion with the rustling of the alder and with the leaves of the poplar almost takes my breath away: and yet, like the lake, my serenity is rippled, not ruffled. These small waves raised by the serotine wind are as far from becoming a storm as the smooth, specular surface. Although it is now dark, the wind continues to blow and roar in the woods, the waves continue to beat, and beings lull the rest with their notes.
The quiet is never complete.
Now the wildest animals do not rest, but seek their prey; the foxes, the skunk, the rabbit, now roam without fear through fields and woods. They are the sentinels of Nature - connective bonds of the days of animated life.»
