Years ago, when SMPTE was still making their back-issues available as part of membership (which they no longer do), I turned up several pieces on EDL - Edit Decision Lists.
There was one interesting piece by Art Schneider (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Schneider) which discussed ‘EDL cleaning’ - which, as the name suggests, concerned the clean-up of EDLs generated during editing sessions.
I believe the piece pictured below, from Aug. 1979, preceded it.
