Whenever I am introduced to a system, the first place my mind goes is analyzing how it can fail. Where are the weak points. Where can bad data be put in to make bad results?
This trait made me an exceptional software tester, but it also garnered me a reputation for being negative. I often forget that people want to hear how cute their baby is before I tell them that it has three nipples and a malformed heart valve. Don't get me wrong; I notice the good working parts, but my standards are high. Good and working is how it should be, which makes those parts normal and unremarkable.
The lesson I take away from a lifetime of being criticized for being too negative is that developers' egos are often even more fragile than their software, and both need to be propped up before you'll get any bugfixes out of them.
