If you are a decent cook and into cooking then there is nothing worse than the "buttons" (i.e. touch-sensitive surfaces) on a induction hobs.
If your hands are not perfectly clean and you don't touch them just right, and your fingers are "wrong" (i.e. mine, I have problems with any touch-sensitive screen like ATMs, ticket machines, etc.) then induction hobs are a nightmare to cook with.
This is one of the many perfect examples of why interfaces are central to so much and, at the same time, they are continuously ignored.
How many emails do you get from legitimate sources where your first through (OK, mine at least) is "this would be a perfect phishing template"?
Just like the nice knobs that we had on hobs (yes, you had to clean them - the surface of inductions hobs is a nightmare to clean in comparison to good ol' gas hobs) and ovens worked under literally extreme conditions (grease, heat, cold, oven gloves, etc.) there are many designs which in the name of some "innovation" have been forgotten. Designs which have been tested, amongst other things, for security and reliability.
What prompted this? A post, via the
, which explains that the US Navy is returning to mechanical helm and throttle controls after going full-touchscreen - this was apparently one of the root causes of a 2017 crash between a destroyer and an oil tanker. Please excuse me for not being surprised in the least…
The best gamers playing car driving games all have real wheels and don't drive with a keyboard and mouse. So why over-gamify interfaces which have serious safety and reliability implications?
The more I think about it the more proper HCI courses should be compulsory to anyone designing modern interfaces. There is research from the '70s which is still so very relevant…
