Aquaponics Wallipini - combines thermal stability and year-round growing capacity of a walipini with the water and nutrient recycling benefits of an aquaponics system.

The walipini is built with a fish tank on the deepest part, taking advantage of the constant temperature underground for optimal fish health. The plant beds are arranged on tiered shelves above the fish tank to utilize vertical space. Plants on the lower shelves could be those that thrive in lower light conditions, while those that need more sunlight are placed on the higher shelves.

Water from the fish tank is pumped up to the topmost plant beds and then cascades down through the lower plant beds, using gravity to assist with water circulation. By the time the water reaches the bottom, it’s been filtered by the plants and can be returned to the fish tank.

Sunlight for the plants is provided through the angled, transparent roof of the walipini. This design allows for a symbiotic relationship between fish and plants in an environment that can maintain consistent temperatures, even in colder climates.
