the more I'm reading about all this, even if you totally put aside the "how did this happen?" question, there are two intertwined issues that I just don't really understand how you make the math work. On one hand you have an insurance market that was already disorderly because of DOI interference and on the other hand you have astronomical construction costs and timelines from bonkers regulatory burden. I don't think those homes on the PCH are ever going to be rebuilt thanks to the coastal commission, I think the timeline for a lot of people to rebuild is going to be untenable (assuming they get insurance money), and I think the taxpayer is on the hook in a really big way here...
