The footnote describes Cordoba during Muslim rule before the 13th century. It says that certain districts were so lit up at night by the lamps of women copying the Quran, it seemed as if it was day.
As someone who understands the miracle of writing by hand and its value, I can only imagine what a sight that must have been. Walking at night across a stone bridge lit by torches, to then walk to the upper parts of the city looking down on it to see certain parts lit up, knowing there behind many of small shades of light, was a woman copying the Quran by hand.
I can feel the warmth of the room she's in and hear little flicks of the flames on the lamps. Maybe the curtain flutters a little with the breeze. She has a bowl of ink and a quill/writing instrument of some kind.
She's careful with her feet and her clothes so as not to disturb her writing position, the paper, or make a mistake. Her movements are slow, concentrated, and methodical.
I can hear the small scritch of the paper as she writes.
It's quiet, she's in the zone, and she's at peace.
How perfect is that?
