According to their 2021 annual report, in 2020 they consumed 71,600 metric tons of pulp for their newsprint division alone which is about 148,000 trees, emitting 1,380,000,000 pounds of CO2, consuming 2,970,000,000 gallons of water, emitting 100,000 pounds of hazardous pollutants. This just factors in production impact, when papers are not recycled about 80% there are additional impacts in landfills to calculate such as production of methane.
Would be fun to calculate a data driven estimate of their total environmental impact since 1851. Given scale of their podcasting and magazine ventures, their data center consumption would be quite substantial too, in addition to all their transportation costs too.
Upon quick glance the 2021 annual shareholder report doesn’t include anything about their sustainability strategy and mitigating their environmental impact.
This environmental paper network calculator is pretty cool.🤓
