I'm pretty sure #git 's "commit" function refers to committing something, as in committing a crime, a deed of ill-repute, rather than "to commit to", as in virtuously engaging one's honour and probity in something.
And it's wonderful that the joke is lost on so many, given the amount of pretty bad code out there.
