On LinkedIn I'm actually leaning towards it being valid, because that's work related, as you say, and if someone's interested in you from a professional perspective, you probably want to know. And that's the only reason someone would want to look at your profile on LinkedIn: to see your work experience for recruiting purposes, OR to see your professional activities and posts and things, for purposes of doing business with you.
For the personal stuff, what you say also makes sense. Maybe once or even twice should be "free", but if someone whom you don't know is visiting your profile every day/week to see what you're up to, they're clearly stalking you, so perhaps the network should let you know....
Like, a drive-by, "Let's check out this Len person" is fine. But if I want to keep coming back, then I should send you a friend request, you know?
