I learned PL/1 in 6th grade by reading a book I checked out of the local library. I learned BASIC in 7th grade by reading books and magazines from the library. I learned Fortran 66 in 8th grade by reading a book from the library. My first programming class was freshman year in college, Fortran 77, a class I breezed thru because I had already taught myself the language years before.
I learned everything by reading. So yes, I read documentation. Why don't you?
