> I realized sending humans into space is a waste of money at present
It's great to see someone else saying it aloud. I have never seen so much cognitive dissonance and rationalization from smart people as there has been toward manned missions. Justifying the existence of the Space Shuttle program was the worst.
Arguments for manned space exploration die when considering the opportunity cost: the best alternative forgone given limited resources.
There are so many probes you can send across the solar system and telescopes you could build with the price of one manned visit to the moon.
One manned Mission to Mars for 6 months versus 100s unmanned robotic Mars missions lasting years + several unmanned sample returns.
Human-rated space systems are orders of magnitude more expensive than alternatives.
