it is striking to me the contrast that the Dune Series paints towards the terrible nature of state power and the personal wisdom of the individuals wielding it. what is left is a deep distrust of political power _as such_ but an ambivalence or neutrality towards particular political figures

the books focus on elite power, but their message is essentially democratic, almost anarchist: that elite power is inherently suspect, and its abuses are fueled by the misguided trust that we place in it
