From New Zealand, I have not had any difficulty with texts or calls on my phone while I have travelled to Europe, Mongolia, Pacific Islands, or USA. It just costs more. I know that when I was in the USA and had a local SIM card, I couldn't phone New Zealand, I had to use my old SIM. I guess you will need to sort with your provider about international calls.
