With AT Protocol, the personal data server does not own the feed – it’s separate from the relay and firehose. And operating relays and firehoses is massively expensive, unaffordable to the average person. Which means that Bluesky is one of the few services capable of running them. If Bluesky doesn’t like you, bans you from being seen, you’re PDS might as well be invisible.
Nostr does it differently because over there you’re not dealing with servers at all – just dumb relays and clients. And your account is basically a public/private key. But the problem is, what happens if you lose your private key? Well, you’re screwed – basically, you have to start from scratch all over again.
So even though ActivityPub-enabled services lack the same flexibility when it comes to flexibility of accounts, it also means operating a server is more affordable, and if you forget your account credentials, you can reset your password.
