The few drag shows I saw were vulgar and misogynistic, for a male audience. Many lesbians were involved in helping sick men during the AIDS crisis, but that aid was not reciprocated. Paris is Burning is fascinating and entertaining but many of those men were in prostitution, and quite vulnerable, likely preyed upon, addicted, and sick; I don’t think it could have lasted long. Whatever feminine ideal they were chasing had nothing to do with women.
