She'd then overlay them with slices of fresh apples, and every few days, she'd spoon sherry over them to "ripen" them for Christmas day.
For a variety of reasons having to do with history, Thanksgiving was not a "big" holiday for my family. The big holiday was Christmas. There was a certain suspicion that, with its mythic symbols of New England Puritans, that Thanksgiving was a "foreign" (as in, Northern) holiday being foisted on us Southerners.
