OK, I don't know what is up with this, but I used FaceTime on my Mac to call a friend. My iPhone (other side of the room) started making interactive noises indicating that it was taking control of the mic. I went to see what's up, and it said I could disconnect the mic by clicking "disconnect". So I did. Then I was left with no mic and the call just ended on its own.
