They haven't protected against spam/DDoS attacks but I'm not sure how locking down nodes with Oxen could have prevented that. What the Session nodes system does well is to prevent bad actors from wasting time and money hosting malicious nodes, while financially incentivizing people with the bandwidth to spare to host a node.
Personally, I'm not loyal to Session OR SimpleX, I'm just saying that right now, Session works a heck of a lot better than SimpleX, which is just a lag-fest of never-ending message loading, spam notifications and questionable anonymity. I hope that changes; the more options we have, the better!
