I've been on Mastodon for about 8 months. I was never on Twitter, but got off Facebook ages ago as I couldn't stand the algorithm. Reddit user more than I like to admit.
Here is what I found:
- With no corporation desperately trying to engage my eyeballs, I have to put in the work to keep my feed dynamic. That means following people and hastags.
- The outrage machine on social media is intentional. Via the algorithm, the interface design and bots.
- Boosting (something I avoided on FB like the plague) helps create community.
- Use and/or explore your local instance. I found some excellent hyper local news accounts I would have missed if I hadn't picked my local server, and a photographer that posts local images daily. Same for topic specific instances for work stuff.
What I haven't seen is provocateurs and bots, which I suspect is from the lack of an algorithm. Faking support for a provocateur is much harder when they can't break through the bot echo chambers via the algorithm. #newbie #TwitterMigration
