What is it like to use the fediverse with vintage computers?

I want to start my own server with #retrocomputing as a goal, but I'm not sure if I should use a Mastodon compatible server (likely not Mastodon proper) for the myriad of clients or something a bit more esoteric like a BBS or something NNTP-based.
